Soldiers return from Iraq, reunite with loved ones

Months had passed since 12-year-old Marissa Jenkins last saw her dad, a captain in the U.S. Army. So when Aaron Jenkins climbed down the escalator at O'Hare airport last Thursday - back from his one-year deployment in Iraq - Marissa jumped into his arms, never wanting to let go.

Forest Park group addresses problem of overpopulating stray cats

It appears it's been raining cats more so than dogs in Forest Park lately. A group of concerned residents and animal lovers alike formed an organization to monitor and aid the growing feral cat population in the village - which, though too hard to actually measure, could likely number in the thousands.

Thief steals nearly $100 worth of antacid medicine

Chicago resident James McEwan, 29, was arrested on the night of Sept. 1 after he allegedly stole $94.95 worth of Prevacid from Ultra Foods, 7520 Roosevelt. When police apprehended McEwan near the store, he apologized and told the officer he stole the five packages of over-the-counter antacid medicine because he was "broke."
Forest Park law student earns scholarship

When you're a crusading reporter chasing down big stories, the question is: will the big story include free hors d'oeuvres and drinks? Happily, the reception honoring Rory Hoskins for winning the John J. Waldron Scholarship not only had self-serve beer and wine, it offered stunning views of the city from the 66th floor of Willis Tower.
A hero's welcome
A large crowd - including veterans - gathered at the Park Sept. 2 to honor the Forest Park-based troops that had been serving in Iraq for about one year.

Knitting is back and better than ever! The library sponsored an introductory knitting class led by Susan Ross a few weeks ago and there was standing room only. The advanced knitters helped the beginners and everyone helped everyone else.

40 years ago
No lives lost, but when 20 firefighters eat enough smoke to get treated at a nearby hospital it goes down as a pretty serious fire. The call came at 3:09 Sunday morning, August 9. The E.W. Kneip Corp. at 7501 Brown Ave. was ablaze.

Forest Park group cares for stray cats

Five years ago my roommate and I noticed the stray cats in our alley. Socks - named for her little white paws - was pregnant, even though she still looked like a kitten herself. Anxious for her brood, we fed them and managed to trap a kitten that we brought to the Animal Care League in Oak Park. But we didn't know what else we could do.

It is one of the great lessons America has learned from Vietnam. Separate the war from the warrior. The war in Iraq should never have been fought. Its execution over the first five endless years was botched by the Bush administration.
